The Smiths..... The Queen is dead.
The album "The queen is dead" was released in the year 1986 and was recently ranked by the NME as the greatest record of all time !
so let's get started with the songs :
The Queen is dead
This song is a whole-life-anthem! It has everything, talks about everything!
It starts with a harsh drums kick accompanying the chorus singing "take me back to dear old Blighty" and few lines of the English national anthem. Here, he's not only scathing himself but the whole "old England'' with it's majestic Queen and classy society, it also has some wit, sarcasm,-specially when he talks about the lack of security in the Palace- and even some anti-monarchy!
You may not like the song from the first time, but IT WILL GROW ON YOU,
Frankly, Mr Shankly
If you're listening in album order, you'll feel a great ease when this song starts, like 'what a relief'! after that 6-minute-hard-rocking record, the drums tempo with the guitar sound really joyful and bouncy even if you're not paying attention to the lyrics., the bassline is just one of my really favorites !
The lyrics are pretty obvious and beautiful at the same time, It's about some artist working something that he's not meant to do, so he talks to his boss "Mr Shankly" to tell him that he's quitting that job that "corrodes my soul" so he can "go down in music history".
I kind of like the motive he's talking about, not these Cliches, yes he's doing it for fame, that may not appeal to many -including me- but that's what he wants, "fame, fame, fame, fatal fame".... but still "I rather be famous than righteous or holy", may not be IDEAL but that's what he wants, it's not like an evil thing to want!
I know it's over
Probably their most famous song ever, at least for me.
The mood and the rhythm here are completely the opposite, pretty dark and much slower,
A really desperate-melancholic-heart-wrenching song that really makes the best breakup song in history! IT WILL MAKE YOU WEEP!
I'm not even sure what to quote, the lyrics is a masterpiece from the very first word till the ending!
He sounds empty, wrecked, lonely, honest and fragile !
"If you're so funny/clever/very entertaining, then why are you alone tonight?"
Cemetry gates
The intro just jumps in, sounding very joyful, but still the tempo is pretty moody, has some ups and downs, and the lyrics are kind of bitter and gloomy, and even sometimes witty and sarcastic, like "I trip you and laugh when you fall"...The story itself is even twisty and paradoxy.
"we gravely read the stones" such a plagiarism !
That's it for now, I kind of got exhausted so the rest of the songs will be discussed in another review.
Have a night that's as awesome as this album <3 ;)
